Verdun wasn't only the theatre of one of the hardest battles of World War One, but also of a large project of bunker construction. The Germans here were very active in reinforcing their defenses. To improve their design they constructed a test field near Spincourt, called Camp Marguerre named after Major Hans Marguerre of the Pionier-Bataillon 2 (2nd Engineers Battalion). The Germans have built numerous shelters here. However the commander made sure he could live comfortably in his own house.
