Few people which visit the "Gorges du Trient", a deep gorge near the Rhone valley, see something strange in the nearby rock. However when you take a close look you can see all kinds of brownish spots, the camouflage of the Ouvrage de Vernayez. The armament of this work consisted of two anti-tank guns, several heavy machine-guns and two search lights. Vernayez consists of three levels of casemates. The lower level also has an entrance in the train tunnel and two emergency exits, one of which gives access to the bridge in the gorge leading to another infantry work. The barracks are located on the upper level that is accessible with a cable railway. When you look closely you can see all the three levels. The lower and middle levels aren't hard to spot, because the camouflage of several casemates has been opened. For one the casemates of the upper level go to the double embrasures of the middle level. Then go straight left until you see a brown spot, another casemate. When you go straight up you can see one of the casemates of the upper level. |
