The construction of the Ouvrage de Scex started in 1911. At those time the standard gun of the Swiss forts was the 7,5 cm gun model 1903. This calibre had been chosen since it was quite effective against infantry, but nevertheles allowed the forts to support their neighbours without damaging these forts. The guns of Scex had to defend several dead angles of the forts Savatan and Dailly located just north of Saint Maurice. The guns of the Scex are mounted on a special fortress carriage. This included a modified recoil system which had a shorter recoil than the field gun. This allowed a higher rate of fire. The sight on top of the barrel is typical for this type of mounting. Its position is not very handy, since it hinders the loading of the gun. |
