The observation post in the 19th century fort near Maulde. It had to direct the fire of three artillery casemates. It has three levels, making it a bit top-heavy. The old fort had been heavily damaged during the German retreat in 1918. During the thirties the fort became of strong point of the Maginot Line. Two casemates with each 75 mm guns were constructed on the flanks, while a unique casemate for a 155 mm gun was built behind the fort. During the heavy fightings in May 1940 a German 305 mm shell impacted just behind the observation post, making it shift a few degrees. Fortunately the next shell hit in the right way, putting the post right again. On the left you can just see one of the destroyed vaults of the old fort. |
