Near Bruille the Germans tried to break through the Maginot Line in 1940. To achieve their goals they fired with 88 mm guns at the French blockhouses. The defenders which lacked artillery could do nothing to stop the bombardmets. The turret of one of the blockhouses of Couple des Ecoles was hit several times by 37 and 88 mm shells. A few shells hit the embrasure and made it turn. This blockhouse was abandonned on the 26th May 1940.
The heavy fightings in this region can be best illustrated with an event that happened near Bruille where the blockhouse of Bruille Sud resisted bravely for a week. When a 8,8 cm gun had finally blown a hole in the front the survivors of the blockhouse abandonned their position, using the dense smoke to cover their retreat. Suddenly one men whose jaw had been cut off by a shell, stops running. Under the eyes of his own troops he took his revolver and shot himself through the head. It was the 20 year old second lieutenant who had commanded the blockhouse....
