One of the goals of the Maginot Line was to protect France against a surprise attack. To warn the main resistance line against a sudden attack a thin line of advanced posts was constructed. These maisons-fortes, literally strong houses, consisted of a blockhouse with a building for the crew. Around Sedan the maisons-fortes had this building on top of the blockhouse.
