A hexagonal pillbox
The rear of a hexagonal pillbox north of Orchies. It has five embrasures for a light machine gun or a rifle. The British seem to have had a number of standardized designs, but you can see local differences. Several hexagonal pillboxes in the second line north of Orchies have rounded corners, while others had sharp corners. The walls of this pillbox are three feet thick. Although the walls look to have been made of large stones it is really concrete.
