The bastioned fort Montjuïc was an important part of the defense of Barcelona. At the end of the 19th century the fort was reinforced with a battery of four 30,5 cm mortars. These weapons had to pierce the weak decks of enemy ships. However the mortars became obsolete when the range of naval guns increased. When the battery was demolished the four mortars were saved and installed around the fort.
