The Nuovo Vallo Alpino is one of the few post-war defense lines. After WW II Italy was in a bad position. It had got new enemies on two of its borders: the Russians which had occupied a part of Austria and Yugoslavia. Even worse, the Yugoslavians had annexated a part of NE Italy, so the Italians had lost a major part of their pre-war defenses there. That's why a new defense lines had to be built. The designs were mainly based on the experiences with German defense lines in Italy built between 1943 and 1945. All the weapons were installed in small casemates and preferably in tank turrets. These offered good protection and a large field of fire while they were a small target.

The line, called Nuovo Vallo Alpino or new alpine wall, consisted of several lines. Each line had several positions which defended the most important passages. The last line defended the bridges over the river Tagliamento. The size of the positions depended of the strategic value of the passages. For example the two bridges near Ponte della Delizia, where the railway and the road linking Udine with Venice cross the river, were heavily defended. The Nuovo Vallo Alpino was only abandonned in 1991. Unfortunately most of the tank turrets were then removed.
