San Michiele al Tagliamento is the most southern position of the Nuovo Vallo Alpino. Here two bridges cross the river Tagliamento. Whereas the river is about 300 m. width upstream, at San Michiele it is only 30 m. width. It flows between two concrete-covered dikes which gives a perfect anti-tank obstacles. The position consists of five casemates, including an observation post with two turrets. The photo shows one of the Sherman turrets armed with a MG. It defended the road bridge. In the background you can see a second sign "Divieto di scarico" which indicate a position for a M26 tank. Behind it is the most southern casemate of the position. |
