After World War II Italy was almost bankrupt. So the construction of the Nuovo Vallo Alpino didn't had to be too expensive. All kinds of old equipment was used, like this observation turret. It had been built to equip one of the works of the Vallo Alpino (1931-1942). After war it was installed in a small casemate between the two bridges of Ponte della Delizia. This casemate served as a warning post to warn for a possible surprise attack. When you take a good look you will see that the frontal observation openings are partly embedded in the concrete.
The casemate has a weak point: the access shaft behind the turret. After several hits it was possible that the concrete between the turret and the shaft would crack, so the turret would move. The rule is that the distance between two shafts and/or turrets must at least be equal to the thickness of the concrete. |
