The front of the Sherman turret near Dignano. Most openings of the turret have been welded close. The gun and the co-ax MG have been removed and replaced by a single machine-gun type MG42/59. Since the engine had been removed the turret had to be turned with a hand-cranck. Since this was a bit slowly it was decided to enlarge the field of fire of the machine-gun. They took the MG mounting built in the thirties for the Vallo Alpino and installed this in the tank. This meant that the embrasures didn't had to be enlarged, unlike the Dutch turrets of the IJssellinie. For more info about Dignano visit this site. |
