The msjor position of Arnhem was built around the brick kilns south of the river Nederrijn. This building also served as a shelter for the crews. A defensive dike around the position had to give protection against attacks and the inundation water. The dike was heavily defended with MGs and 40 mm AA guns. The machine-guns were installed in old Sherman tanks, two of them are shown on the picture. All the equipment and the armament of the tanks had been removed, leaving the empty hull. The turret was armed with a single medium machine-gun that had a 360° field of fire. The tank hull was protected with 30 cm of concrete, offering an additional protection against hollow charges. |
