The construction of Fort Ruigenhoek started in 1867, three years later it was completed. It was part of the second line of forts east of Utrecht. This city was strategically very important, so when the rifled artillery was introduced in 1859 the defense of the city had to be improved. Therefore between 1867 and 1870 a serie of five forts (With one built later between 1877 and 1879) was constructed east of the city. Both during the First World War and during the moblisation in 1939/'40 the fort was occupied by infantry units. Although built in the polygonal era Ruigenhoek was still quite classic with its four bastions. But the most interesting aspect of the fort are the concrete casemates. In fact the fort was used to experiment with some constructions. Two MG casemates, made of pre-fab concrete plates, were built in the front. It also received three observation posts for a periscope. During the mobilisation the fort was once again reinforced with several MG turrets and shelters. Here you can see on of these shelters next to an original gun shelter. |
