Caponiers are very rare in the Dutch forts. Most of the older forts had bastions whereas the ditch of the modern forts was defended by the troops on the remparts and retractable turrets. One of the few exceptions is Fort Pannerden. This fort was built between 1869 and 1871 on a small hill on the right bank of the river Rhine. That's why the fort has a dry ditch which is very rare in the Netherlands. It was decided to defend the ditch not by the traditional bastions, but by smaller caponiers. The gorge and the right flank, the least exposed sides of the fort, were defended by a double caponier. Its design is quite special, because it consists actually of two single caponiers. |
