Fort Pannerden was built between 1869 and 1871 on the right bank of the river Rhine near the so-called Pannerds Kanaal, a canal linking the Rhine and the river IJssel. For several centuries the banks of the Rhine had been used for invaded army to march to Holland. Between 1885 and 1890 the fort was extensively modified by the addition of three armoured batteries, the central battery with four 15 cm guns (shown hear) and the other two with two 10,5 cm guns each. In the Interbellum the outdated armament was removed. However later it was decided to incorporate the fort in the new defense lines built in the thirties. Therefore two 7,5 cm naval guns were installed in the 15 cm armoured battery. This included enlarging two embrasures and closing the other two. |
