The only remaining 15 cm gun turret
The western front of the Position Amsterdam was the weakest. It ran close to the coast. Because of the proximity of the dunes it was only protected by small inundations. The main fort of this sector was built near the North Sea Canal which linked Amsterdam to the North Sea. The armament of this fort, called Velsen after the nearby town, included three 15 cm turrets made by Krupp in Germany. The guns, 24 calibres long, have the same name as the field guns used in those days by the Dutch army. However it was totally different and fired a different type of ammunition.

In 1983 a large part of the fort was demolished, but the turret building remained. Two turrets were later removed. One of them is stored the Fort Hoek van Holland near Rotterdam. There are plans to build a new building to install the restored turret in.
