The indundation sluice east of the fort
The river Lek, like the other large river in the New Water Line played an important role in the defense. At one hand their dikes provided an easy access through the inundations. On the other hand the water flowing through the river was crucial for those some inundations. That is why between 1841 and 1849 two forts were built on the banks of the river Lek, Everdingen and Honswijk. Their main objects were the defense of the river banks and the nearby inundations sluices.

This sluices was built just east of fort Everdingen. Since it is located on the enemy side it was heavily reinforced. However even its heavy construction couldn't resist the hand of time. Therefore the restoration of the sluice started several years ago. This included reinforcing the foundations with concrete. To do this all the water around the sluice was pumped away, showing this impressive construction.
