The barracks of the fort are the largest of Metz. They have a length of 270 m. The construction started already in 1867 when the French began to reinforce the defenses of Metz. However in 1870 the fort hadn't been finished and it easily fell in Prussian hands. In 1871 they started to finish the fort.
