Gros ouvrage du Hochwald: casemate no. 3 of the ditch of Hochwald is definately the most impressive infantry casemate of the Maginot Line. You have to realise that it consists of two adjacent casemates. The lower casemate fired in the ditch, while the upper casemate covered the glacis of the ditch. Despite what some writers claim this ditch wasn't designed as an anti-tank ditch. It was made of masonry and wouldn't have resisted a large armoured attack. Fortunately the forest and the steep slopes would have made such an attack impossible.
