An overview of the battery
The construction of this battery started in 1912. The armament consisted of six 28 cm mortars. These weapons had to penetrate the thin deck of the enemy battleships. Since these mortars were less accurate than comparable flat-trajectory guns a total of six mortars were installed. Vettor Pesani was one of the few Italian coastal batteries that retained its guns during World War One, since Venice was close to the frontline. However after the war the guns were removed, to be replaced by 76 mm AA guns in World War Two. After the war the battery was abandoned which it is still today.
