The first generation of Italian forts built after 1885 were equipped with some 57 mm retractable turrets. In the forts of the period 1900-1915 these were replaced by retractable MG turrets. The turrets of Venini were armed with twin-barreled Gardner MGs. In fact these are the only turrets of this type that still remain.
