In 1905 the railway tunnel under the Simplon pass was completed. The new tunnel reduced the travelling time between Switzerland and Italy, not only for travellers, but also for an attacking army. Therefore both parties started to construct defenses on their side of the tunnel. The Italians built a large casemate armed with two 75 mm guns and two machine-guns near Iselle. The embrasures were protected by a large armoured plate.
