This fort played a very important role in the Battle of Verdun. In September 1914 a German division reinforced with several heavy batteries tried to outpass Verdun and attacked the fort. The 450 defenders in the fort had a large disadvantage, their fort was in the original state, so any part of the fort wouldn't windstand heavy hits. Despite the bombardments with 210 and 305 mm mortars the fort resisted. This way the Germans were never able to surround Verdun, saving this important part of the front and most importantly Verdun itself.
