The so-called Forts de Rideaux were quite isolated with a distance of about 8 km between the forts. That is why the designers anticipated that the forts could be surrounded during a siege. Therefore most forts of this type had barracks with two facades facing each other. This way they gave enough protection against the fire of the flat trajectory guns used at that time.
