The barracks of the fort. They face the north, so they could be exposed to enemy fire. However the roads in the area didn't allow the transport of heavy guns, so heavy bombardments were not expected in this area. At first view the location of Fort du Télégraphe is a bit strange. It did defend the access to the Col du Télégraphe and the Col du Galibier, but both passes are well behind the frontline. However the fort defended a north-south connection. It was possible for an enemy that had broken through the defenses at Bourg St. Maurice to march through a valley north of Télégraphe to the valley of the river Arc. When they would cross the Col du Galibier they would get behind the important fortress Briançon. Télégraphe had to prevent such an attack. |
