When Marie-Thérèse was finished it was one of the most modern forts at those days. The ditch was not defended by bastions, but by embrasures in the counterscarp (the exterior wall of a ditch). The guns were all installed in a large tower with three levels. In case of war the wooden roof could be removed to prevent a possible fire. The fort has been restored and it is in a good condition.
