Infernet was one of the first forts built under general Séré de Rivières to reinforce the defenses of Briançon. With the introduction of rifled guns, which had a much longer range, the city became vulnerable for bombardments from the surrounding mountains. Therefore the French built several forts on the most strategic mountains around Briançon. Here you can see the central barracks with the gun emplacements on top of it.
