Fort Dauphin was built on a small plateau at a height of 1459 m, some 80 m. higher than the citadel it had to protect. However the plateau was halfway a mountain slope. Therefore it was possible that the enemy would position his guns higher up the mountain to bombard the fort. To protect the barracks they built a high wall through the fort.
