An overview of Fort Dauphin
Fort Dauphin was built around 1724 to protect the citadel of Briançon. The fort was classical in having four bastions. However its design was also adapted to the terrain. Since the designers expected fire from enemy batteries in the nearby mountains they built a high wall through the fort.

In the background you can see a flat mountain top. This was the Italian battery Chaberton, armed with eight 15 cm armoured turrets. You can clearly see its strategic position. However the battery was mostly destroyed by four French 280 mm mortars in June 1940.
