The narrow gorges in the Alps are very easy to defend. Two of the gorges north of Nice were defended by two simple road blocks. This one, Bauma Negra, defended the Vallée de la Var. It was armed with a 120 mm gun and a 40 mm revolver gun. All the building and casemates were cut out in the rock to give them additional protection.
