Barbonnet (1883-1886) was built to close some northern access roads to Nice. Its strategic importancy is best illustrated by the two 155 mm turrets which were very expensive at those days. The design of the fort is quite conventional with a deep ditch defended by caponiers. Here you can see one of these caponiers.
