Roche-la-Croix was orginally built in the 1880's as a stone fort with a large ditch on two sides. When the fort was converted in a modern Maginot work it was decided to maintain the ditch. Two new casemates were built for its defense. They were each armed with two LMGs and a 50 mm mortar.
