Treporti, built between 1845 and 1851, was one of the first polygonal forts, even eight years before the construction of the forts designed by Brialmont started. It had to defend one of the entrances to the port of Venice. Here you can see the gorge of the fort with the rear of a caponier on the right. In the background you can see an Italian fire direction tower. These towers are typical for Venice. The flat terrain forced the defenders to build high observation posts.
