One of the two 'abris élémentaires' on the fort
One of the two 'abris élémentaires' on the fort. These small concrete positions replaced the old 5,7 cm turrets. This type of construction had to defend the front of the fort and was about 20 cm thick. Walem has two of the few remaining 'abris élémentaires'. The others were blown up by the Germans to scrap the rmaining glacis plates of the 5,7 cm turret under the construction. The reason is simple. When the Germans blew up the first turret of Fort Lier they found out that it had no glacis plates. Since Lier and Walem had the same type of turrets they concluded that the turrets at Walem had no glacis plates too. Although they did had glacis plates the Germans left them undamaged.
