This fort had to defend the estuary of the Scheldt just north of Antwerp together with Fort De Perel on the other side of the river. Both forts had to be armed with three gun turrets with 24 cm and 28 cm guns. However both the turrets and the forts were outdated when they were finished, so one of the two forts remained unarmed. Here the entrance of Fort St. Filips, the only one that has survived the extension of the port. Unfortunately it is heavily polluted by the nearby oil refineries.
