One of the buildings for a gun turret. After the war a large part of the remparts were removed, so nowadays you can see the height of the buildings. Just before WW I the unprotected glacis plates of the turrets were covered with cement bags to give some additional protection. However this was in vain as the bags gave very little protection. In 1914 all forts around Antwerp were either destroyed by the heavy German and Austrian artillery or they had to surrender when German troops entered the Fortress Antwerp.
