The roof of the destroyed cloche GFM of block 8
The roof of the destroyed cloche GFM of block 8. Monte Grosso survived the bombardments of June 1940 almost unharmed. However this was not the case in 1944. In that year the Germans incorporated the work in their defenses around Sospel. When they abandonned it American troops quickly occupied it. Engineers put explosives in the embrasures of a turret of block 8 to make an entrance. The explosion blew off the entire roof of the turret. Nowadays the 30 cm thick roof still survive. The turret has been restored using concrete.
