The 81 mm mortar was the standard weapon for the large works in the Alps. They had to cover the dead angles of the flat-trajectory weapons. The mortars had a range of 3,6 km, much more than contemporary field mortars. The fortress mortars had a heavier barrel and fired a special shell.
